I know an oil company chemist the said that over the counter additives were added to oils that were made back in the 50's. His comment was that the oils back then, to now, have one thing in common. Their both are sold by the qt. Oil containers use to have there oil spec stated on the outside of the container. Starting at SA for spark ignition engines. ( Gasoline fuel ) Oils with the C rating. Thus the compression ignition rating ( Diesel ) Have also made these same advances over the years. That's a lot of advancements over those years. But still sold by the Qt. ( GRINN )That S rating is now at SO. I have an Astro that I bought new in 96. Used 10W30 oils of various good quality brands in it. No additives were ever added. It's now at 335,000. I change oil every 4,000 miles. Have never added oil between oil changes. That engine has had NO work done on it other then recommended maintenance. My question is. How can an over the counter additive improve over that? I've ha
d many of my company cars, and trucks do this same thing. You see lots of cars, and trucks that are pushing 200,000 on the road. That is due to many changes in oils, better crank case ventilation systems, and fuel injection systems mainly. 5 years ago I pulled the oil pan on our 78 GMC 403 to check things out. The pan inside was still vary clean . Pulled two rod caps off. And two main caps. Put plastigauge in to check the clearances. The bearings were to factory spec's. Additives are great if that's what you like to use. I'm NOT saying that anything is right, wrong, good, or bad. The chemist has his Doctorate, and works for a motor oil company. I'll go by what the chemist say's. He's not trying to sell me anything extra.
