Gentlemen,

I am using the Howell fuel injection system which is supplied by Applied. The kit included the fuel pump. I installed the system and all works very well, but the fuel pump is incredibly loud. It's the loudest item in the coach.

Is this normal? Should I switch to another fuel pump?

Thanks for any input.
Tom K.

The fuel pump pressure for a GM TBI system was 13PSI and used a Rochester throttlebody (TB) and 80 pound per hour (PPH) injectors. The Howell EFI kit used a Holley TB with 80PPH injectors. Just before I purchased my Howell system (circa 2009), Holley changed to 63PPH injectors and Howell seemed unaware of this. It caused a lot of issues for those of us who purchased a Howell system at that time.

The fix would be to increase the fuel pressure from 13 to about 20 PSI. The built-in fuel pressure regulator got unstable at anything higher than about 17-18 psi. I don't know if Holley changed back to 80PPH injectors, or maybe they supply an external regulator to get a higher stable pressure. I eventually changed to a Rochester TB from a 454 with 80PPH injectors.

Getting back to your question, I believe the fuel pump in the kit I bought from Howell (2009) was capable of about 80psi, but the regulator brings that down.

I'm currently using a dual fuel pump setup using Airtex 8094 pumps. These are rated at 13-17PSI for GM TB systems. They are quieter than the original Howell pump.

Dual pumps let you remove the fuel tank selector valve and gives you redundant fuel pumps. Here is my setup:

I would not say the Howell pumps was "Incredibly loud" but it is noticeable. Are the pump clamps rubber lined?
