G'day,

I'm back in the USA for three months to sell both my GMC's along with lots of spares and other vehicles I've accumulated here over the years. I'll be here until September 13th. and will publish a list of stuff for sale.

Right now I have the need for a set of cam bearing for a Mate Downunder, anybody have a set or know where I can get one. Evidently there's none to be had from the parts supply houses.

Please respond to this message or give me a call on 346-422-7288 if you know where I can get him a set.

Regards,
Rob MUeller

Rob,

A - Glad to hear from you after sooo long.

B - Sorry to hear you are selling out of your USA GMC collection.

From what I read of OZ, I'm surprised that they let you travel out of the country.
If you are returning before late September then I guess you are not planning to make the Lebanon rally.
Shame that is....

We have missed you.

Matt

Matt,

No problem leaving OZ, USA required that I have a negative PCR 24 hours or less than before I left. Oz has done quite well handling Covid with a population of around 26 million we've lost only 8,097 people to date. Compare that to Texas with a population of 29 million they've lost over 88,000!

Even though I used frequent flyer miles to upgrade to Business / First class Traveling internationally with all the Covid crap is stressful. Besides touring the USA by myself is of no interest, been there, done that.

I'm keeping the one in Australia.

I need to be back in Australia before the Lebanon Rally.

Thanks, once I get back to Oz I'll stop by here a bit more often.

Regards,
Rob

Hey Rob,

So good to see you are here in the states even though it is to dispose of all of your GMC and other accumulated stuff. We will miss you after you are gone.

Probably no need to tell you this, but I'm gonna anyway for the sake of others that have not seen this. Your coaches and other vehicles have been sitting for several years now, and oil has drained off of all bearing surfaces leaving them dry. Before you attempt to start those motors, read this article to save any potential bearing damage.

https://www.gmcmi.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/weidner-starting-engine.pdf

There is one part of the article that reads as follows:

"Now you have oil on the cylinder walls.
All that is left is oil to the cam lobes. To get oil to the cam, you must start the engine."

and later in the article

"Turn the engine over to start and bring
to 2000 RPM immediately.
Run at 2000RPM for a minimum of one minute to lube the cam and lifters.
At 2k RPM, the rods will be throwing lots of oil on the cylinders and camshaft."

I have come to realize that this is not the case, and the 2000 rpm run is not necessary to lube the cam. There is adequate oil coming from the lifter bores immediately above the cam lobes to lube the cam and will take place during the step that includes running the oil pump and turning the motor over to get oil pressure up before the start. For those reading this, the next time you have the intake manifold off, using a drill to turn the oil pump for preluding, run the drill and observe the oil coming from the lifter bores and spilling on to the cam. Lots of oil there lubing the cam. The 2000 rpm run is not going to hurt anything, but not necessary for cam lubrication. JWIT

Looking forward to seeing your list of stuff. If you should get into the upper midwest you are always welcome to stop and see us and you are welcome at the Greater Midwest Classics summer rallys. Hope to see you sometime before you return down under.

It's good to hear from you. Sorry that you will be selling your stuff, but I can understand. I'm still amazed that you were able to operate GMC Motorhomes here in USA from your home base in Australia.

Hey Rob. Good to see you here. All the best.
Larry, the 2000 RPM thing is important to throw oil up on the walls/rings as any priming does not do that. That’s why I don’t like cranking as too slow and those parts suffer. IMHO.

Great to hear from you Rob. Check with Larry's Engine and Marine in Tucson for the cam bearings. They have done a blue million Olds engines (including the machine work on mine) and will probably be able to source them for you.
