How best to remove the vinyl stripe that goes across the front and down the sides?
I only need to remove a small one foot section at this time, but we would like to replace the complete front cap stripe as it is getting pretty faded.
I searched the Forum and found several suggestions, all several years old.
I tried the Harbor Freight heat gun and a putty knife with less than satisfactory results. The stripe comes off in many, many little pieces leaving glue. Should I use a real razor blade?
I do have acetone for the glue removal.
Any new suggestions? And what the heck is a "plastic razor blade?"
Thanks,
Don and Susan Jeffers

I used two total but my stripe had been overpainted with enamel paint and that took a good bit of extra time and effort for the wheel to remove. You MIGHT be able to do a standard coach with one wheel. I used a HF variable speed buffer/polisher and it worked really nice. Too fast and it burns the paint.

That would have made a great Robin Hood YouTube video!
Bob, did you use the torch even on the hood section?

The other Royale had a second vinyl stripe applied vary carefully over the original. Thus removing both at the same time. I did have a vary small amount of base paint come off. Maybe about 3 square inches total. I used a propane torch with a 75% flame. And on a day with the the temp above 70 degrees. It's important to keep the flame moving over about a 12 inch area. Use a plastic putty knife, or a body filler apply tool. Use that to get a starter edge up. Then just start pulling gently with your fingers slowly. Once I got the heat right. I could pull several ft at a time. It took me about 2 hrs to remove both the narrow, and wide stripes off.

I have a 76 Birch, stripes were flaking so I used a pressure washer and it took the stripes off without too much effort. Only thing to watch out with this method is if any of your paint is chipped or cracked I would not recommend as the pressure wash could lift the paint too. Also if your stripes are not cracked but just faded I do not know how pressure washing would work as the cracks give an edge for the pressure wash to grab.
Some adhesive was left behind but I was able to remove it by lightly wet sanding with 650, 1000 & 2000 grit paper. The wet sanding also helps to blend the faded paint to the original unfaded paint under the stripes. This was an original Emron paint. I do not know how the wet sanding would work on a coach that has been repainted in the past. Follow up buffing with polishing compound.
This worked for me.

I used a decal removing wheel that mounts onto a drill. Kind of like a circular eraser. It worked, but took about three of them to remove my stripes as they wear down as you use them. Still have adhesive left, but hope to slowly work on that once spring hits once again. My coach is currently buried under the 8" of snow we got last night.

Rubber wheel in a die grinder will remove the vinyl and the adhesive and
not damage the paint on the alum or composite panels. Google 3m vinyl
stripe remover wheel and buy a few of em. If you buy enough they will throw
in the tool with it.

I know this is the the lazy way out and frowned upon but I just put a new stripe over my old one. Sanded off any existing decals. It not restoration quality, but the coach looks handsome in my opinion. Gotta use your time wisely with a newborn in the house.

Thanks to all for the suggestions and help.
I've taken the stripes off small 1 ft x 1 ft body repair sections of an early coach and a 75 or 76 coach.
Heat and a sharpened putty knife removed the stripes in bits and pieces. The heat softened and tended to bubble the early panel's paint, but the later panel's Imron took the heat well.
Acetone took the glue off the early body panel easily, but the later model glue is resistant. Acetone never did get it all off. Will try some 3M products later.
I've yet to cut out and remove the one foot section from the vinyl stripe of '78, but that will come later.
Thanks again to all.
