It's GMC but not motorhome. I am looking for a steering column for a 73-87 GMC 3 speed manual shift. My granddaughter has a '75 or '76 GMC pickup (pink, of course) and the shifter mechanisms are soloppy enough that occasionally it gets into 2 gears at once and locks up. My son & I want to buy a column refurbish it and then replace the original column - that way she can continue to use it.

Any ideas, suggestions, leads will be appreciated. Thanks.

Bill,

Have you considered a floor shift conversion? Just an "idea" as I don't know if they are even available.

Rob M.

Aren't the bushings still available from GM? The lower bushings were a wear
item.

Or perhaps a machine shop could whip up some bronze rings?

I've done a limited number of columns before, and sometimes fabricating is
faster, easier, cheaper.

Good Luck.

Al,
No GMC TZE yet.

That is a typical wear item of 3 speed on the column shift of the era. If you are coming to Hamilton you can go with us to Trester's to see what they have in the yard. Parts use to be available to repair those 30 years ago.

I don't actually know which transmission this is, but most of the top-load side shift (column shift) have a bar between the two shift yoke shafts that is is supposed to prevent engaging into two gears. You might check that, they do wear.

There are also fiber, plastic or hard rubber bushings at both the column and the transmission ends of the shift rods. I had these break and fall out of a 65 Gladiator and it made driving a real trick. I just figured it out (parts were not available in 1985) so I turned some out of nylon and as far as I know, (the truck went back to the original owner's grand daughter) they are still there.
