I don't know if I was hallucinating or what, but I could have swore there was a recent discussion on an ac alternative being used which used the portable units like is used when the ac goes down in an apartment and a hose set up you would put in the window. I wanted to look at it and can't find it now. Does anyone out there recall this and could direct me to its location? Thanks

Kerry Pinkerton posted about Aerodynamic improvements and included a note about a portable a/c unit:

I am thinking along the same lines as an alternative to a second roof mounted unit.

I like the small 8K unit a bit better. Should run on a 1000W generator. I have a small 1KW Honda that you can barely hear run. Might be just the ticket for an overnight run. Two of these would probably be fine for hot weather down south. 16K total.

A friend has one and commented that they collect a lot of water so a drip drain will be a necessity. He also commented that they ALWAYS use inside air and have no way to use outside air. If I go with one, I'll be looking for way's to 'deconstruct' it and adapt it for outside or inside air draw. Pretty small less than 6" deep and 10" wide.

I've been thinking about going all electric and if I do, I could easily put a modified window unit where the furnace is.

Where do you think you could mount it? That one measures 18 x 13 x 24? Maybe under the table might work? Interesting idea...

If I had that much room left in my coach the DW would buy another set of dishes and a new "GMC" wardrobe. As it is, I only have room for a clean pair of underdrawers and some tube socks. Smile

keep in mind you will need to exaust the condenser air to the outside or you won't cool the coach, only a small spot while you are heating up the rest.

IF I can de-construct it....probably have to cut the lines, loose the refrigerant, move the air handler and condenser to ???, and replace the refrigerant. I was thinking the whole thing might fit where the furnace is if I go all electric. Also if I go all electric, I could put another 'rearranged' version in the old propane compartment and pipe the cold air around the rear of the water tank.

Yes, the exhaust air has to go outside and I'd want the option of outside air or recirculate. I'd probably also mount a heat strip in each air stream. In our LIMITED camping experience, 5KW heats the coach up for sleeping and another 5KW will run you out in short order. We haven't been in the low thirty's and don't plan to be...on purpose anyway.

Still in the thinking stages. Won't be this year.

If you split it why not mount the compressor and condenser under the floor behind the step area. You'd have to add a fan for the condensor. Then run the lines up through the floor and put the evaporator and fan under the couch.

Emery,

If Kerry mounts the evaporator under the couch I would suggest that he duct the airflow so it is directed vertically up the wall
behind the couch not out onto the floor.

If I split the compressor off, I can make the lines as long as I want and put the condenser ANYWHERE. There is dead space near the hot water heater in the bath module for the rear unit.
