Can't help you with the linkage Appie. But when I added some gauges to my dash, the gear indicator was in the way and I just took it off. We sometimes call them 'GM Guess A Gear" because they are not always pointing to the gear you are actually in.
I just count the number of indents on the gear shift lever to know if I'm in Drive. In addition, on my coach, the telltale light still works that says "Set air bags to auto for 5 miles then go to hold". This lights up any time you go through neutral into drive.
I have not missed not having the indicator.

Thanks for the input guys I want to make it work and really would like a picture of how the wire is connected to the column and the small guide mr woods mentions
The Po has installed a electronic speedo showing up to 300 km/h witch is a bit fast$
So I reinstalled the original ( luckely he did not throw it away)
But the wire is not there
I just put in a new speedodrive and changed the bulb to led Now I can actually see the indicator pilotlights

All mid and big GM cars of the era with column automatic use the same basic string and spring pointer. It's almost like a tough dental floss. There is a simple loosten, adjust and tighten of the string pulling mechanism on the column to get the needle to point to the right letter.

Appie, I doubled a piece of nylon fishing line and attached it to the pointer and the connection on the column. It took many tries and lots of not nice words to finally get it to point to the correct letter.
