ENGINE OIL COOLING RADIATOR USED?[ 33 votes ]
1. I used the Original OEM Radiator for Oil Cooling 24 / 73%
2. I use an Aluminum Radiator for Oil Cooling (Replaced the OEM Radiator) 6 / 18%
3. I use a Supplemental Oil Radiator Coil IN ADDITION TO the OEM Radiator (In series for Oil Cooling) 1 / 3%
4. I use a Separate Oil Radiator and have BY-PASSED the OEM Radiator (with supplemental FAN) 2 / 6%
5. I use a Separate Oil Radiator and have BY-PASSED the OEM Radiator (without supplemental FAN) 0 / 0%
6. I don't use Supplemental oil cooling anymore (I took out the engin oil cooling and plugged the holes) 0 / 0%

What experiences can you share on your oil-cooling set-up - How does it work for you?

What type of specific non-OEM equipment (coils/fans) do you now use and where did you mount them?

My setup isn't in the poll. I checked 4. I use a Separate Oil Radiator and have BY-PASSED the OEM Radiator (with supplemental FAN) but have an aluminum radiator instead of the OEM. I did not want to risk any contamination from my previously blown engine.

Oil temp runs the about the same as coolant temp and never wavers.

I thought oil should run higher than coolant temp to evaporate water (unavoidable combustion byproduct) and any fuel that might get in the sump. I don't think colder is always better. If oil is at 180 it will be slow at ridding it if you do lots of short trips, though once moving down the road it's probably ok.

My water temp is usually at a consistant 195 F. I know my oil pressure but not the oil temp. I only use the gauges that I really need at a glance once in a while. The rest of the time I just watch the rode and feel and listen for changes in the coach.

The oil should stabilize over mid 180f to get rid of moisture. Most flex lines and nitrile seals aren't happy over 200f. Every 20f increase in temp reduces oil oxidation life by half (general rule of thumb). Viton high temp seals can handle higher temps but aren't very flexible and are more likely to wear grooves in rotating shafts.

i guess i'm not the only one that thinks the debree could somehow find its way back into the motor even if it is only a small posibility.

G'day,

OK, I'll take this discussion up a notch!

If an oil filter that DOES NOT have an internal bypass is used it is IMPOSSIBLE for any debris lodged in the radiator oil cooler (larger than the oil filter's particulate rating) to get into the engine.

I'll put my money where my mouth is and wager, as much anyone who disagrees wants, that the statement above is correct. Shocked

Rob, I don't doubt your research but on the off chance I get the wrong filter AND the desire to get the heat of the oil out of the cooling system and into another radiator, I'd still go with a stand alone filter.

Kerry,

I'll acquiese to the possibilty of someone installing the wrong filter because some parts counter monkey didn't know what he was doing and sold the wrong one. However, I reckon that with your techincal know how you'd make DAMN sure you got the right BLOODY oil filter especially when installing a rebuilt engine! Very Happy

As far as the oil flowing through a cooler in the radiator one must also take into consideration that in colder climes it also serves the function of bringing the oil temp up to level desired by the guys that designed the engine. If one adds a seperate air / oil cooler I think that it should include a thermostatically controlled bypass valve. Worst case scenario is theoretically you could wind up with oil temps too low to boil off moisture. Sad

I remember when I gave the presentation at Branson about the oil flow path through the 403 and 455 you asked if all the filters listed on the GMCMI Parts Interchange Index were non-bypass. I comitted to purchasing one of each of those listed to verify they were. I did that without knowing that there were TWENTY SIX (26) different filters listed and I'm sorry once I discovered that I was not willing to spend the money to buy all of them. I did create a spread sheet with all of them listed with a view to finding and checking the specs for each one. I started that project but found finding some of the off brand names difficult to find (read time consuming) I stopped.

Here's a website where one can order a case (12) Wix 51049 oil filters for $80 (including shipping)

http://www.discountfleetsupply.com/wix51049.html

That should prevent getting the incorrect filter for awhile! Very Happy

I thought Wix 51258 was the one for the 455.

David,

The Wix 51258 will fit along with 25 other oil filters according to the GMCMI Parts List as I noted in my previous email.

I stumbled on to this website which lists the specs of oil filters: http://oilfilterdata.com/index.php. I have not checked the data below against data from Wix but assume it to be correct.

Here's the spec on the Wix 51258:

Model: 51258
Brand: Wix
Thread: 13/16-16
ADB Valve: Yes
Bypass Valve: None
Efficiency: % @ 21”
Burst PSI:
Height: 4.338"
Diameter: 3.66"
Displacement: 45.64 inČ

http://oilfilterdata.com/index.php?view=filter_info&model=51258

Here's the spec on the Wix 51049

Model: 51049
Brand: Wix
Thread: 13/16-16
ADB Valve: No
Bypass Valve: None
Efficiency: % @ 21”
Burst PSI:
Height: 5.178"
Diameter: 3.66"
Displacement: 54.48 inČ

http://oilfilterdata.com/index.php?view=filter_info&model=51049

As you can see the height of the 51049 is taller (larger filter paper surface area) and it does not have an ADB which prevents oil draining back into the engine.

Living in the Southwest or south of the Mason-Dixon Line will the need for a separate oil cooler be more of a requirement than an option?

Neither--it's a waste of money and by adding parts to the system, can reduce reliability.

Appie,

I suspect the Jegs write-up is a "generic" write up because the PF24 does NOT have a bypass.

Here's what Summit says:

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/acf-pf24

You can see that Summit is correct from the photos here:
