My setup isn't in the poll. I checked 4. I use a Separate Oil Radiator and have BY-PASSED the OEM Radiator (with supplemental FAN) but have an aluminum radiator instead of the OEM. I did not want to risk any contamination from my previously blown engine.
Oil temp runs the about the same as coolant temp and never wavers.

I thought oil should run higher than coolant temp to evaporate water (unavoidable combustion byproduct) and any fuel that might get in the sump. I don't think colder is always better. If oil is at 180 it will be slow at ridding it if you do lots of short trips, though once moving down the road it's probably ok.

The oil should stabilize over mid 180f to get rid of moisture. Most flex lines and nitrile seals aren't happy over 200f. Every 20f increase in temp reduces oil oxidation life by half (general rule of thumb). Viton high temp seals can handle higher temps but aren't very flexible and are more likely to wear grooves in rotating shafts.

i guess i'm not the only one that thinks the debree could somehow find its way back into the motor even if it is only a small posibility.

Rob, I don't doubt your research but on the off chance I get the wrong filter AND the desire to get the heat of the oil out of the cooling system and into another radiator, I'd still go with a stand alone filter.

I thought Wix 51258 was the one for the 455.

David,
The Wix 51258 will fit along with 25 other oil filters according to the GMCMI Parts List as I noted in my previous email.
I stumbled on to this website which lists the specs of oil filters: http://oilfilterdata.com/index.php. I have not checked the data below against data from Wix but assume it to be correct.
Here's the spec on the Wix 51258:
Model: 51258
Brand: Wix
Thread: 13/16-16
ADB Valve: Yes
Bypass Valve: None
Efficiency: % @ 21”
Burst PSI:
Height: 4.338"
Diameter: 3.66"
Displacement: 45.64 inČ
http://oilfilterdata.com/index.php?view=filter_info&model=51258
Here's the spec on the Wix 51049
Model: 51049
Brand: Wix
Thread: 13/16-16
ADB Valve: No
Bypass Valve: None
Efficiency: % @ 21”
Burst PSI:
Height: 5.178"
Diameter: 3.66"
Displacement: 54.48 inČ
http://oilfilterdata.com/index.php?view=filter_info&model=51049
As you can see the height of the 51049 is taller (larger filter paper surface area) and it does not have an ADB which prevents oil draining back into the engine.

Neither--it's a waste of money and by adding parts to the system, can reduce reliability.
