Thanks, Gary! The solenoid seems to be working correctly now and we moved down to the east side of the Salton Sea to visit with friends from the northwest. Will head out tomorrow for the west side of Phoenix to see still other friends before heading south to Puerto Penasco, MX.
It was really disappointing to see how seemingly cheaply made that solenoid was on the inside. It was new just three years ago. The contactor plate was some kind of sheet metal with what appeared to be brass or copper flakes glued or sintered in a ring around the outside edge. The contact points themselves were apparently brass or copper, but that is all. Hardly the kind of mechanism one would expect to be able to transfer several hundred amps reliably year after year.

That's a shame. It used to be the starter solenoids had a copper contact, and you could simply flip it over when it got arced up. Biggest problem was getting the device open, the seperate ones are often riveted. I've resurrected many this way.

Next time, buy a starter complete for an Olds Diesel or Chev Diesel. They
are much more robust internally. If you have access to a COMPETENT
automotive electrical Remanufacturer have your old starter repaired with
all heavy duty parts. Note: this is likely to cost more money than an auto
zone over the counter exchange one will. I guess it all depends upon how
well you like to change starters in walmart parking lots. Me, not so much.

Have fun at Rocky Point. We did a rally down there several years ago and had
