Has any one installed a remote (rear) A/C Heater unit from a GM SUV or
similar size?
I Believe the OEM A/C compressor has excess capacity to support this
modification.
MY QUESTIONS ARE:
What restrictions exist on the A/C hose length from the compressor to the
interior unit ?
Is a solenoid valve required to stop Duracool flow to the remote unit.
If solenoids are required, are they required on both legs of the A/C
plumbing?
I looked thru the Photo archives but could not find a posting.
The folks at Vintage Air were not helpful as they sell their unit as a
stand alone installation not an auxiliary unit.
Any info would be great value as I reassemble MAYDAY.

Don't know about AC, but I had a Chevy van with a rear heater unit plumbed in much the way our water heaters are. Worked really well, and would be a simple install using the existing hoses.

I don't remember whom it was, but somebody here has added an underseat radiator (such as used in school buses) and added appropriate water lines from the existing heater core circuit for rear coach heat.
I'll just becha that somebody will be able to point you to the information, Espen.

I was in the custom truck sleeper industry for 12 years, and we installed a "slave unit" in all the bigger sleepers. These were simply teed into the high and low pressure line of the original AC system - no solenoids needed.
I installed one like this in our 1974 GMC and it produces a lot more cooling than the original leaky underdash unit.

I often considered this and figured the criteria was a pre 94 R12 unit from a Suburban. Bought on on Ebay and the guy shipped a late model Ford van unit 134a. It was cheap so I just have it taking up shelf space.

I had a couple o Subuirban company rides which had the rear A/C. I asked my cousin the HVAC engineer, he said there's no shutoff or anything necessary. When you turn the fan on, the air flow across the expansion valve in the back evaporator will open it and let refrigerant flow through the aux evaporator. Turn the fan off, the evap quickly cools and closes the expansion valve. The compressor has sufficient reserve to run both evaps, if you're only using one it will simpkly cycle off more often.

I think that Larry Shaffer of GMC-49r fame did this, but he only ran it to
the frontroom area and not all of the way back to the bedroom. I thought
that I had heard somewhere that our system only uses about 1/3 of the
capacity of the stock AC compressor.

AND, it doesn't matter if the unit was for R12 or R134a. Either will work.
Someone had posted that they had a Surburban on their shelf but it was for 134a.
They can use it as an aux. evaporator. It will have its own expansion valve. Just put the hoses in parallel with the existing hoses.

I have also listed where I got the hoses made tha have a tee and a fitting for the original hoses on the end.

Agree. That unit should work fine. Be sure to flush out any old oil well!

I am curious about your great looking installation of the additional A/C evaporator. You chose to cut a hole in the back of the unit, and allow the old A/C air to pass into the new unit (if I am looking at it correctly). At first glance, this would seem to be counter productive, given that it seems the old air is fighting air passing through the evaporator. I probably don't understand the way it works, can you please elucidate? I don't in any way mean this as a criticism, I just wonder why you didn't just let the old air pass behind the new unit instead of plumbing it through the new unit.
By the way, thanks for posting the source for your parts, I see that place has a wealth of parts available for A/C installs. I had not realized that a wall unit like yours was even made. I'd been thinking of an under the passenger seat install, but yours is making me rethink...

I went to Danhard's website and can't see where you are able to purchase their products. Probably because they sell mainly to OEM and Dealers. Do they sell direct?

NO, you are looking at in incorrectly. I didn't cut any holes for the original air to flow through the new unit. The original setup is still in place and flows through the original dash outlets. The new unit is a stand alone unit and the hoses are in parallel with the original. I just placed it below the dash because it fit well there. I could have run longer hoses and placed it anywhere else in the motorhome.
The air flow for the new unit is that it draws air from the bottom louver and it flows through its evaporator core and is blown out through the outlets at the top.
