Tony. I tow in the Gross weight of 19,000, to 20,000lbs. That is a 78 Royale 403 with a 3:70 final drive. With no extra cooling devices. Royales are the heaviest GMC's. I use a weight distributing hitch. The enclosed trailer has 4 wheel brakes. If I'm in the mountains like on 70 West of Denver. I use my open trailer as you get up to I think 12,000 ft. Gross weight is then down to 15,000 lbs. But to do this. Your GMC MUST be in top notch condition in all areas of operation.

To tow the weights that I do with our 78 403. I made some changes to the frame. And do inspections of that frame. I also change my final drive, and trans fluids at around 8 to 10 thousand miles. Most people go way too long on those fluids. Towing or not. I also change my power steering fluid every other trans fluid change. Brake fluid is changed every 3 years. Fluids are real CHEAP. Parts aren't. Bob Dunahugh Member GMCMI

Randy has a good point with the Silverado. But it's not that simple for a lot of us. We don't use our GMC as a camper per say. I do road racing. I need a place to stay when I get their. When we travel. The wheelchair will not roll into the Silverado except the back. And that's not a good way to travel for her. ( GRINN ). When we want to just travel. MOST hotels, and motels don't have handicap rooms with roll in showers. Almost all have tubs. And for most people. A shower is used. Not the tube as a tub. Thoughts tub equipped handicaped rooms are worthless for us. When we're on the road. We have to have that handicap van with us. And that list of reasons is long. Bob Dunahugh Member GMCMI
