My local club, the Pacific Cruisers, has very restrictive membership provisions. If you sell your GMC because of age issues you are out. If one spouse dies, and the remaining spouse cannot deal with operating issues of ownership and sells, she is out. If you sell your GMC with the intent of buying another GMC, you are out. There are no exceptions, no provisions for "guest" members, and no "associate" memberships for those who do not have GMCs.

Our "sister" club to the north, the 49ers, does have an option of an "associate" membership for those who have sold their GMC, but who have been long-term contributing members of their club, and their "associate" status is approved by 2/3rds of the members.

I understand that the Jet Setters have rather inclusive membership provisions.

Could any of you help me with provisions your clubs have used to retain as members those who, for whatever reason, have contributed much to the club, but have sold their GMC ?

Thanks, in advance.

Fin,

Each club be it local, regional, or international have as a
little bit different make up and slant. Some are strictly GMC technical and some are social, and with others a mix in between. If you feel a change is in order then maybe you should feel out the general membership. If a majority agree with you then you should present the change to the club board. Remember the board is there to represent you the general membership and guide the club along.

Well Fin, if you are selling out, maybe you can talk them into making exceptions for vdub bus owners.

Fin,

This question is very hard to answer publically and not upset members / board of the Pacific Cruisers. I have sent you an OFF NET
reply.

Dan ....

Fortunately the rule has no effect on me.

But I am on a mission to change the rules.

Even Duane Simmons' widow, Billie, could not continue as a
pacific Cruisers member when she sold their GMC after he died.

And to us, he was "Mr. Onan", and they had contributed to our club since long before me.

Jim, thanks. I am the club Treasurer, and therefore on the board.

As part of my quest to alter our rules I am trying to offer examples from around the larger GMC family that might offer guidance and options.

I have watched long-term members be "terminated", often for reasons way beyond their ability to control. It saddens me.

The board has suggested that I offer options, so I am trying to give as much information as possible.

Again, thank you.

Rob ....

I have always appreciated your opinions.

As stated, our club has no provisions for dealing with any member if they sell their GMC. Age or death is no excuse. Even those who have given greatly to the club over countless years are excluded unless they presently own a GMC.

Yes, a member could theoretically invite them as as a guest, but there are no provisions in our "rules" dealing with this.

As I wrote earlier, I am the club Treasurer and on the Board. They have encouraged me to explore options. I am trying to collect data to convince them that the club would be better served by a more inclusive policy.

The past members of this club who have been excluded by these rules makes me sad.

What is the definition of "own"?

A lot of people keep their GMCs someplace other than their own property, such as a storage lot.

A lot of club members might have their GMCs in various states of repair/disrepair/pending restoration, etc.

Some may begin dismantling their's for parts.

How many parts have to be missing before it ceases to be a GMC motorhome?

To cut to the chase, does possesion of the VIN plate off the firewall constitute ownership?

There are always GMCs being reduced to scrap (sadly). So why not just provide VIN plates from scrapped GMCs to those valued ex-owners and keep them on the roster?

Simple. Change the rules.

"If you owned a GMC period, regardless of what you do with it, you may be a
member for as long as you wish."

Looks good to me.

I used to belong to a few sports car clubs ... and to attract and retain members and maintain the community, many clubs use this language ...

"Those who own _______ , are interested in them, or wish to preserve the legacy of the marque and the community are eligible for membership or associate membership, at their option. Associate members will have all the rights and privilieges of membership except voting."

Perhaps this will this work for you.

Sammy .... You are right. The "cure" is easy. All it takes is the "willingness" from the board.

I am there to encourage them to do what i think is the right thing, to hold on to those who haven done so much for the club.

"A" ....

I think it will be better to adapt the rules. I don't think we have any ex-members who have enough "parts" to attempt continuing membership with a carb and a VIN nimber.

Mostly this is about honoring long-time members who for life or health reasons .... No longer do.

Fin,

I would suggest you use the GMC links on GMCMI.com to the various regional clubs and read their by-laws.

Here are links to two, Dixielanders and Classics, as examples and both have provision for "Associate" membership.

http://www.gmcdixielanders.org/Bylaws.pdf

http://www.gmcclassics.com/docs/Classics_ByLaws.pdf

Good luck,
Dennis

Ken ...

Sometimes people get "stuck" with past rules. I am just trying to offer the board solid cover for making a change when some member cannot imagine changing anything.

I am trying to convince them that when old rules have a negative effect (like kicking out older members just because either age or death makes GMC ownership impractical) that you can actually change the rules.

When the original rules were written, and most of the members were many years younger, what is happening now might not have been imagined.

But what they did not foresee is happening now.

If one spouse dies, and the remaining spouse cannot deal with operating issues of ownership and sells, she is out. If you sell your GMC with the intent of buying another GMC, you are out. Fin,

Thank you for your compliment.

Since you have explained the situation a bit further I'll be happy to comment.

At the end of the day the GMC is just an inanimate object.

People and friendships they form make life worthwhile, inanimate objects do not.

Rob M.

Rob ....

I have always appreciated your opinions.

As stated, our club has no provisions for dealing with any member if they sell their GMC. Age or death is no excuse. Even those
who have given greatly to the club over countless years are excluded unless they presently own a GMC.

Yes, a member could theoretically invite them as as a guest, but there are no provisions in our "rules" dealing with this.

As I wrote earlier, I am the club Treasurer and on the Board. They have encouraged me to explore options. I am trying to collect
data to convince them that the club would be better served by a more inclusive policy.

The past members of this club who have been excluded by these rules makes me sad.
