G'day,

I have been considering modifying the lower step as per this photo:

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/random-photos/p52413-modify-step.html

Anybody ever do this?

Espen, if you have the time could you take some more photos of this area from different angles especially from directly above?

Regards,
Rob M.

Rob,

IF you do that mod, be sure to include the suggestion I've made before:
Drill access holes through the step riser for access to the rear motor
mounting plate bolts, 'cause I don't think you'll ever reach them again
from the sides.

We needed to use the left one (the only one I've drilled) during the latest
installation 'cause I just could not get that bolt started from the side --
which I have not obstructed.

I posted a couple photos a while back of what the PO did to the left side to install a jack-knife couch. I hasn't created any problems that I'm aware of.

Hmm.. doing the dishes or taking some pictures.. Needed to get out also so here you go, not the best but it is freezing outside..

I think the main issue would be to reroute the gas fill tubing, other than that it should not be any problems.

The step appears to me to be a structural member. I couldn't bring myself to cut it out for my jack-knife sofa installation. I cut a "pocket" into the plywood top of the step (and only one of the aluminum plates) and modified the frame of the sofa to work in the pocket.

I haven't taken pictures. Not sure I am satisfied with the mod, since the exhaust pipe is now only a couple inches from the wood of the pocket. I built a heat shield, but it would have been better if I had the skills and materials of Kerry Pinkerton to make the pocket out of sheet metal.

And I had to cut recesses in the pocket for the transmission and for the fuel filler plumbing. That complicated the mods to the jack-knife sofa frame. Like I said, I don't really like what I did. Fortunately, it can be restored to original just by removing the pocket and replacing the plywood, if the next owner wants it restored.

Mark,

I agree.

I will have to heli-arc in new aluminum framework so the structure does not loose integrity.

Espen,

THANKS! I can see that it's doable but not going to be easy the fuel filler pipe is in the way as is the charcoal canister.

Sorry I sent you out in the cold; did I get you out of doing the dishes? ;-)
