You're going to be less-and-less capable of comparing prices on an item-by-item basis. I've written rudimentary dynamic pricing algos in the past, but it's getting very sophisticated now. There have even been instances of vendors charging more if you browsed with a Mac device.

The future of retail is dynamic pricing. So why can't we get it right?

Amazon got called out on it a few years ago (2006-07) and supposedly swore off the practice but I've heard of a few tech-savvy experiments (one conducted at my request) that produced results that *seemed* to indicate otherwise.

But keep in mind that this is NOT an Amazon-only situation. In fact, you are more likely to see dynamic pricing in less popular websites because of less public scrutiny.

IMO, no. "Super cookies" (aka persistent cookies) aren't true cookie files but a composite of other ways to track you. If you have Flash on your machine, there is a hidden tracking file there, for instance.

As for having visited a competitor's site, that's a function of your browser history (the same function that changes the color of visited links) and not a cookie per se.

Ever search on an item on a site then see ads for that item on other sites? You're being tracked across domains by the ad servers.

Besides, they have your IP#, too.

Works both ways:
One of the key metrics online merchants track is 'abandoned carts.' Want free shipping on a site you've just found? Load the cart, fill in the shipping info and your email, then do not checkout. Wait a day, I'd say there's a 30% chance you'll get an email offering free shipping or 10% discount.

"Even worse, many of the tools that Web browsers offer to protect privacy are not effective. Tracking companies have refused to honor the 'Do Not Track' button. And Google Chrome’s 'Incognito' mode and Internet Explorer’s “InPrivate Browsing” mode won’t protect you from being tracked."

Good, authoritative article. Worth a read.
