Just finished installing a back-up vacuum pump for my brake booster. In order to keep leakage to a minimum, it is important that you use a good quality check valve in the booster. I tried two different brands. I got one off of the "Help" rack. I blew and sucked on 4 of them before I found one that would seal. Then I went to NAPA and got their part.....either #89000 or #1338..depending on how you read the box. It has a spring inside that slams the sealing flap closed to prevent leakage even at low differential pressures. So here are some pics to look at to help you identify a check valve that will work. Just what I found that works.
HTH someone.

Larry,
I ran into the same problem when I did ours. My solution was to get some from the local Pull-a-Part. I didn't think to look for a spring but the ones I found were good.

Yup, good suggestion. The old ones off of an older GM car seem to work better than the new ones. I needed two of them and actually found one old one in one if a dozen 5qt pails of nuts, bolts and spare parts that I've accumulated over the 40 some years that I have been doing this. Don't know how old it is or what it came off of, but it works better than the "Help" rack check valves. IMO, the Help Rack check valves are just a piece of junk, not worth the plastic they are made of. JMHO

That's exactly the conclusion I reached back when I was making PVC vacuum
reservoirs for sale: The Help check valves leaked at least 20% of the
time. Don't think I ever found a bad one in a junkyard. I distinctly
remember one car that had obviously been junked long before -- probaby 6+
months. When I pulled the check valve there was a loud 'swoosh" of
entering air to replace the vacuum held all that time. Good stuff. :-)

Larry,

The NAPA Online parts search SUCKS!

I entered 39000 - nothing
I entered 1338 - nothing
I entered Check Valve - search came back with:

Were you looking for:
Category > Exhaust Air Check Valve
Category > Exhaust Air Check Valve
Category > Power Brake Booster Check Valve

I clicked on: Category > Power Brake Booster Check Valve

The first check valve that popped up was:

http://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/CatalogItemDetail.aspx/Power-Brake-Booster-Check-Valve/_/R-UBP89000_0063327786

For the hell of it I searched for UP39000 - nothing!
I tried UP 39000 - nothing!

Hi All:

Last year I had the inlet hose end of the check valve on my sensitized booster break off, leaving me almost without brakes. Fortunately I was just leaving home and didn't hit anything until I got the coach stopped. I did, however, roll downhill, right through two stop signs. I was able to get a NOS replacement at a Chevrolet dealer. The part No. is: 18021981 Valve kit...........List $ 27.11

Gary,

Well it looks like the problems I had with this is not Dan's fault!

It's bloody Larry's fault - partially! He noted; "Then I went to NAPA and got their part.....either #39000 or #1338.depending on how
you read the box"

I just looked at the photo he posted:

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/brake-booster-check-valve/p52318-vacuum-power-brake-booster-check-valve.html

Where part number on the box is 89000 NOT 39000!

Guess what comes up when you enter 89000 in the FIND A PART block?

You got it! DOUH!

New comment: Rob Mueller sucks at reading!

Regards,
Rob M.

The link is the right one but you can find it at most any auto parts store, just say you need a GM style vacuum booster check valve from any 70's vehicle.  You could carry in the check valve on your coach as a sample-- it's exactly the same part-- no reason to do a hard search, and that is the only part you will need-- well you would also need a barbed double male reducer from the large outlet on the check valve to the 3/8 other end of the valve.  All the rest of the vacuum hose is all 3/8"

If you have any other questions concerning the system let me know, I'm happy more folks are preparing their coach with countermeasures.  I feel it's really important,

Rob,

Since the link you showed called for part # 89000, did you try that?
