I never gave much thought to winterizing, but it is supposed to be 14F on Tuesday morning and 17 on Wed. Amazingly today was very nice so I blew out the lines, poured the pink stuff in the traps, opened all the faucets, opened all the cabinet doors and turned the heat on low.

I just hate winter (even though we don't have much of one). The frustration with having to winterize is that it is supposed to warm up rapidly after 2 days of sub-freezing temperatures.

I'm ready for August.

If you believe the science, this is part of global warming. If not,
then it's just an odd year (s)

The Willamette Valley here in Oregon is usually around 40° in the
winter. We had minus temps for over a week before Christmas. -10 was
2° off the record set in '72. Odd, fluffy powder, too. Our snow is
usually very wet and heavy. 2013 was also the driest year on record, ever.

Cold and snowy is fun for a week. Was happy to see it go away and find
no broken pipes... but I think my pressure washer wasn't winterized
correctly since that has a leak now.

Yucca Valley CA. 72* yesterday, but cooled down to 60* today...Burrrr. Wink

Oh, BTW you think it is cold where you are...places in Minnesota were at -45, not counting the wind-chill. Not that far from where we live.

Stick,

You appreciate irony - one of the main news items here in Australia is the Russian icebreaker carrying a group to Antarctica, some
of the group are scientists studying the effects of Global Warming.

The ship is stuck in ice that's not supposed to be there due to global warming! ;-)

The US is dealing with an Arctic polar vortex right now. Coincidentally(?) the Antarctic polar vortex has gotten stronger over the past three decades and studies think this wind pattern change is pushing the ice seaward.

If you're interested, here's some info on the increasing Antarctic Sea Ice. Other sources say Antarctic ice -land AND sea- has diminished overall but it's shifting to sea.

I'm trying to figure out how to blame Dan for this. As we know it is ALWAYS Dan's fault.

Finn, a former Alabama dog, woke me up at 6AM to go outside. He did not care much about the temperature and loved the snow drifts. The OAT is now -19 with the wind at 20 mph for a wind chill of -45. Overnight the wind gusts were as high as 45, so I now have a few 2.5 foot drifts in my 400 feet driveway. I just plowed it and 3 other drives clean yesterday when the temperature was 31. That is a 50 degree change in 14 hours. According to the National Weather Guessing Service we only got 5.6 inches of snow in the last 24 hours. It is the wind causing drifts that bothers us.

I think I'm being punished by mother nature for removing the snow yesterday that she put there. She did not like it so she filled the drives in again. I'm probably not going to plow it again at this wind velocity and temperature. When it is this cold the snow is very light a fluffy so these people will just have to drive through it for a few days.

I just haven't been able to figure out how to blame this on Dan yet, even though we all know it is always Dan's fault. When I talked to him yesterday he was getting this same storm as rain.

Ken,

Aha!

I'll bet Dan's the reason the USCG dispatched that icebreaker to Antarctica!

Here is the "quote of the day" from the National Weather Guessing Service. Keep in mind my current temperature is -19.

Next 6 Hours:
Partly cloudy with strong and gusty winds. Temperatures warming rapidly to -13 to -17F. Winds W at 25 to 30 mph.

It is the "warming rapidly" that I question.

Weird weather. Yesterday it got into the 50's with a light rain. Left a church meeting at 7pm and it was 48. Three hours later it was 28 and all the water on the plants and roads froze and a dusting of sleet on top of it. Fortunately for us, three was no source of atmospheric moisture so the snow never materialized. That's a good thing because THE snowplow wouldn't be able to keep up.

It's 10 here this morning with a high of 15 expected for the day...going down to 4 tonight. Now you guys up in the frozen north need to understand that this is FRIGGING COLD to us. One of my boys manages an Advance Auto Parts and they are out of antifreeze. There isn't an outside faucet cover in the area. Some schools closed and the rest are delayed. Even NASA at Marshall Space Flight Center is opening 2 hours late with a liberal leave policy in effect.

I don't think it's worth turning on the heat in the shop for the next couple days so Imperial Wheeling Machines will be closed and the GMC cabinet repair will just have to wait. It's too cold to paint anyway. Very Happy

Fortunately for use Southerners, this is a temporary condition. In a couple days we'll be back in the 40's/50's.

Zero now. May be our high for the day. I went out at 8 am and turned two elec heaters on in gmc. Both faucets have 2 inch string of pink stuff hanging. Pure pink, from bottle, froze in toilet bowl. Hope we don't bust too many lines. Never had the pink stuff freeze before and I have never had this much stuff in the lines. Can't do anything now but hope for the best.
Ain't my fault Ken got a dog from Dixie and took him to Yankee land. Serves you right, having to go out early with -19 degree temp.
