It's been a while since I saw a post here on the GMCnet. I'm using GMCforum since I no longer am able to post via the email system. So I wonder if the GMCnet is finally dead, what with all the competition from Facebook and the new gathering place at www.gmcmotorhome.org.

It's still the best reference site around; years of threads from the best knowledge base.

Yes very true that there is a vast knowledge base here. However, if the GMCnet goes down, the knowledge may be lost.
I know there is a backup on Google:
https://groups.google.com/g/gmcnet-archive
But when I connect to that, the newest post I see is from 7/8/22. It also shows that "you have been unsubscribed from the Gmclist mailing list". I have been unable to subscribe back on.
Google might choose to delete that archive.
About this time, back in 1999, I discovered and joined the GMCnet. I really don't want to post to Facebook, but I have been monitoring some of the GMC sites there. gmcmotorhome.org seems a good alternative, but I miss my old friends from the GMCnet that seem to have moved on.

I really hope not, but it seems like most people have abandoned this group for the more "modern" groups. I have just recently started to post/reply on the new forum, but I still like this one better. I guess like most "getting older people" I don't like change all that much. I like what I'm used to and it takes a while to get used to a new format.
I have even referred people to do a search of THIS forum, from the OTHER forum because this one has a great history and a wealth of knowledge. I have tabs open on my computer for both and also Facebook (which I view as a platform for posting social events/pictures) and I check them frequently.

Its been over a month since there has been a posting started by someone from the Email side. Has that connection been broken again like it was last summer?
The Google archive never got reconnected after the email connection was fixed last summer so it has not been updating since the beginning of July/2022. I tried bringing that to attention so those with the power could fix it, but that never happened. It's too bad because the search feature is much better than the Forum search.
A lot of the long time knowledgeable members seemed no longer seem to post here without a mention of their status. Maybe they are emailing each other directly...
Facebook is definitely NOT a good platform for exchanging meaningful information and its search function is the worst.. I can't even easily find my own posts there. Like Carl says, its a social media for exchanging photos and memories, NOT, "how do I do this..."
To me FB is like going into a bar to ask a technical question. Sure you will get lots of answers, and a lot of BS from those to just like to talk about nothing, and the next morning your head will hurt.
I like the new forum. It's easy to add a photo or document to a posting and works much better when I want to look at it on my phone.
Just my 2 cents.

Bruce,
I made a similar observation about FB some time back and another in the discussion pointed out to me that the platform is all about talking and not about listening....

In the words of monty python- not dead yet.
Facebook and the gmc forum, that is where new people are
Going. That is a fact, but people still monitor this. The email part that broke really did a number on participation. I think some email list users have no idea the posts ever stopped.
Hopefully this forum stays around.

I ALWAYS search here first. However I check both forums and find myself reading through a thread on the other forum for sometimes days in my spare time. I did that here when I first got my GMC. I have never been to the FB pages or sites. I'm sure I'm not missing anything from there. I check here most every day to see what is new.

If you want the archive to work again contact the administrator for the email server and tell him that you would like the server re-subscribed to the google archive again. It is my understanding he controls that google archive id.
If you want the link back to the emailers and then on on to the google archive, contact the admin for the email server. It has something to do with the email server hosting company shutting us off because they think we are spam.
All of this is second hand knowledge. We on this venue can not fix it and do not control the google account. I have no idea if this GMC forum is even still subscribed to the email server because last time it went away we could still see them but they could not see us. Now it is both directions not working. It appears like the GMC forum has been shut off but that is only a guess.

For another vehicle enthusiasts group, I migrated a Vbulletin forum to a Kunena one with the help of a developer and finally a bunch of database table manipulation. Result was that the folks who had a build thread with lots of photos on the old forum were linked up with their new usernames on the new one and their posts came over.
Moral of the story is that with the cooperation of the owners of the site and access to the software and data tables, plus some paid developer help, pretty much anything can be done.
Here is the place to find a developer.

I view the other sites as entertainment, I view this site as formal education. Most of my knowledge is a result of this Site and the supplied GM manuals.
I am extremely appreciative of all those who have contributed to this site.
I do hope there is a way to either make active or preserve the threads on this site.

I hope this forum continues. The contributors here have helped me with so many challenges with our GMC. When I get into "panic mode" during a repair, I know I can come here for help.
It's like Solomon said in Ecclesiastes:
"What has been will be again,
what has been done will be done again;
there is nothing new under the sun."
That always reminds me that there is no new problem with my GMC that someone else hasn't also already had, and figured out how to fix. For that, I'm grateful.

Tom, Larry, and Bill. What you may not realize is the GMCnet as you know it is really two sites in two different states owned by two different people. They copy each other so if one goes away it does not necessarily mean the other one will disappear too. The current problem is someone, or something, shut down the communications between the two systems.
You and I and everyone we currently see are on the Texas site owned by Eugene. He is no longer a GMC owner but he has left his site operational for the rest of us to use. He has never taken a dime from us for doing this either before or now. I have not heard that Eugene is wanting to shut us down. That could change if the traffic falls off too much.
The other site (email only) is based in Georgia and is owned by Patrick who started all of this GMCnet many years ago. He also is no longer a GMC owner but has left his site operational too. What he intends to do in the future and what traffic is like over there, I do not know because I never visit the email site.
Because of the separation on the sites I am assuming the traffic is down on each of these.

Ken,
If Gene's site is this list, what does Patrick's site do?
