I am currently replacing the outer CV joints on my coach and checking the rest of the steering components. I checked for any bearing play while the tire was on and did not feel any at all. I have the knuckle off now and there is some play when grabbing the rotor and rocking it back and forth. My question is if there is an acceptable tolerance when the hub and knuckle is off the vehicle?

Can you still get the bushings for the relay lever or need to be sent off for machining? Lower ball joints will also be replaced since they have some play in them.

There are specs in the appropriate manual for the hubs and knuckles. You
should NOT have enough to move the rotor in and out and feel it with the
axle in place and the nut tightened to specs. If you have the axle out,
then the only thing retaining the hub is a sheet metal piece with 3 cap
screws holding the seal in place. You take those 3 screws out with the axle
nut removed, and the hub and rotor assy will pull out of the knuckle. So,
IF IT WERE MINE, it would come apart for a serious look/see. But, I am as
fussy as Dave or Jim K is when it comes to hubs and knuckles.

It has been a long time since I worked on an old front wheel drive. I will separate and take a look tomorrow.

If the knuckle is off the vehicle the hub has no load on it as its normally squished into the bearings by the outer cv joint nut....the question is should it have any play? Yes some would be acceptible in my books as these are 2 seperate bearings were as a car better not as its a compact bearing (one unit). You said when it was together you didnt have play and thats when/how its supposed to be checked.

Now if you could pull the hub out pf thr knuckle with your hands id be worried.

My opinion of course here.....

Back in mid 1980 we had great machinists and mechanics that owned the
coaches and taught us a thing or to about the Hub and Knuckle.
All our Knuckle and Hubs when the bearing clearances are measured will last
over 80-100,000 miles without any greasing.
Dave L and I follow the same specs and supply component parts and give
instruction on how to achieve it.
In fact our Mechanical Designer, Rick Flanagan ha over 120,000 miles on our
assembly and it is still tight.
Only those that never learned how to prepare the hub and knuckle and check
bearing clearance say it neds to grease them every 20,000 miles.
Reason for needing to grease it often is that the knuckle and bearing are
rocking and the seal is not holding the grease in.
I say reach out for help and acquire parts that are doe right and save on
long term.
