Just in case you don't read the April GMCMI newsletter, which will be published soon, you might want to know about something else that the Board approved. This is to make the GMCMI Parts Interchange available in the Members Only section of our website. This will take some time to get written, posted and tested but it should be available by next spring.

This is not just a listing like the written one but it will be an interactive file which will allow one to put in a part name and get a listing for that part on your screen. It will be written so that the format will work well with a smart phone as well as a computer. The written booklet will still be printed and mailed each year to members. It should be carried with you on trips as you won't always be able to get on the Internet when you need part information.

Yes, Kim Weeks, GMCMI Webmaster (in addition to her job as Convention Manager) will be spending many, many hours getting it set up properly on the GMCMI website.

Yes. When you join you are sent a package that includes the Parts Interchange. You will then get a new one every year. The electronic version is meant to supplement the paper version , not replace it.

hmmm.. sound just like the system I offered to GMCMI for free at Montgomery thats online now...
I am a GMCMI member and have GMCMI specific info on line, that is 'filtered' for GMCMI members only along with info submitted by non-GMCMI members.
Surely your not going to copy this approach now??
Samples shown at Montgomery sure look like mine..
just sayin...

No, Charles
We are not copying your approach in any manner. What GMCMI has in the planning and implementing stages right now is far different from what you presented to GMCMI at Montgomery.
For example when I asked how I would find an Autozone part number on your system you indicated that I would first sign onto your system then to find a part I would be directed to the GMC Parts Book here I would have to look up the original GM part number. I would then have to input that part number into a different part of your system where I would be shown a listing (if one had been inputted) . Then I could be directed to the Autozone web site where I could look up their part number. I found this way too cumbersome and It would seem to be much quicker for me to just use the GMCMI printed Parts Interchange. I have tried to look up parts on the Autozone site before and unless I can put in a make and model year it is almost impossible to find parts. As you know, they do not list the GMC classic motorhomes in their computer.

The system that Kim Weeks is working on for GMCMI would allow GMCMI members to input a part name and it will bring up a screen showing the data that is on file for that part -- similar to the printed Parts Interchange. It would be fast and formatted for both a computer screen as well as a smart phone.

There currently is no electronic on-line GMCMI Parts Interchange. So whatever you have put onto your system was manually input from the GMCMI Parts Interchange. That document is an ever changing thing as input is received from GMCMI members regarding new parts and replacement for obsolete part numbers.

Currently there is no way that you could possibly "filter it" for GMCMI members only as you do not have the database of members and their security codes for access to the GMCMI members only site. Since members can assign their own passwords even GMCMI does not have all this information. If a member drops his membership his access is controlled by his email address that we do have on file.

All of this was explained to you either in the meeting or in my letter to you after the meeting. Please do not imply that we are copying anything that you have done.

As I mentioned in my letter to you we believe that your concept for a “one stop shopping” experience for GMC motorhome parts may be a valuable tool for the GMC motorhome community.

However, we are concerned about the security required to restrict access to this document to GMCMI members only. We are concerned about the maintenance efforts required on the part of GMCMI personnel to maintain the integrity of the document and of the security of access to the document. We are also concerned about possible problems that could occur with an individual hosting the GMCMI Parts Interchange on an at-home computer. The current GMCMI website is hosted on a commercial site with multi levels of protection against hackers. Also, what would happen to our GMCMI information if you were to be "hit by the proverbial beer truck"? If that happened we would have to start all over on our website so we feel it best to just do it the way we want right now and get it done.
