Hi Tom,
When we brought the restored Clasco back fro FL to OR this summer I used some form of fuel stabilizer in every tank with seemingly great results. The Lucas seemed as good and perhaps a bit more cost effective than the others so I bought a case of it. A short while back Armand M. Posted about another fuel conditioner called Archoil which I said I would test on this 3000 mile trip. So far I am impressed but that is far from scientific evidence of anything. Could all be placebo effect or it could be a real improvement. Anyway, no fuel related issues of any kind so far. No matter what the brand, I think these fuel stabilizers are doing some good at combating the ill effects of the alcohol. My take, but others may have different opinions.

A friend sent this today:
New E-15 gas coming to your gas station. DON'T USE IT!
Please watch to save your car's engine re the new fuel at the pump.

Will this Lucas product work to combat potential E-15 problems?

Thanks, Jerry, Matt and Bob for your insight and suggestions on the effects of ethanol on our fuel systems. This is good information. As a follow-up, I sent the email below to Lucas Oil to see what assurance they might provide when using their "Safeguard" product for ethanol protection:
Copy of email to Lucas Oil:
I am a member of a large group of owners of 36-41 year old GMC motorhomes, which run Oldsmobile flat tappet 455 or 403 engines. We are very concerned with the effects of ethanol on our fuel systems, including fuel lines, filters, carburetors and engine components. What assurance can you provide that the Lucas "Safeguard" fuel system additive will protect our engines and fuel system components from the damaging effects of 10% and 15% ethanol in gasoline? We look forward to your answers. Thanks, Tom Whitton - Paducah, KY
I'll let you know what they say.

Where were you not able to buy either 10% or 0% ethanol fuel? I have not seen anything other than 10% or 85% around here on the 'right' coast. Before his death last May, a long term friend of mine had a fire in his 32 Roadster. He was running an AFB carb and we think over the years the 10% fuel had damaged the aluminum fuel body, thereby causes the leak the caused the fire.
I tried to upload some photos but 1024 isn't near enough.

I received the following email from Lucas oil concerning the protection the Lucas "Safeguard" fuel additive provides from ethanol. He also sent two attachments , which I will send separately.
Tom,
I've attached a compressed file that will provide you with information
regarding several products that would be helpful in dealing with the needs
of these classic vehicles. The technical data sheet for Safeguard is
included. Perhaps the best benefit of this product is that it neutralizes
the chemistry in E-10,15 or 85 that leads to the degradation of metal in a
fuel system - especially carburetors - resulting in corrosion. Safeguard
also gives this gas 4 to 6 months of stabilization. Corrosion is the most
expensive issue because it can lead to the need to replace expensive
carburetors.
I've been dealing with this issue in my vintage motorcycle and found a
source for new fuel line that will take a tight radius and resist the
cracking that occurs in traditional rubber fuel line.
Best regards,
John Mingus

I need some help with the Lucas technical information. I am having trouble getting the "Safeguard" technical info over to the GMC Net. Would someone volunteer to allow me to email it to them for them to give it a try? Someone more computer savvy than me. I don't know how to do it but I believe it is worth seeing. Send me an email off net if you are willing to try.
Thanks,
Tom Whitton

What about replacing any gaskets and 'o' rings that are not compatible with alcohol with ones that are? You'd need to rebuild the carb, but that isn't THAT bad a job....at least you do it at the bench.
Damn, just found another project for the bus.
P.S. quadrajetparts.com has ethonal resistant accel pumps....and lots of other neat stuff.

Thanks for everyone's input and help in looking into the ethanol situation. After reading through it all, here's my personal conclusion:
The GMC Net jury confirmed that ethanol is bad for the fuel system and it is best to avoid gasoline with ethanol added altogether but this is getting difficult to do. It looks like there are a few fuel additives that seem to reduce the damages to an unknown degree. With this verdict in mind I bought a bottle of Lucas "Safeguard" yesterday and added a few ounces to the gas tank of the GMC.
Appreciate comments.

Rob,
I fully agree with your points. Other than trying to avoid gasoline with ethanol apparently about the only thing we can do for now is to add something like Lucas "Safeguard" or another magic elixir to our fuel and hope for the best. As for the rubber hoses, I replaced mine with hoses that are supposed to be ethanol resistant but the jury is still out on that, as well. You didn't mention gaskets but, depending on the material, I guess they can be damaged by ethanol like everything else. All this adds up to a fine kettle of fish.
Thanks for your input.
