The reason is simple gasoline and ethanol mix is a mixture of non-polar and what is sometimes referred to as a semi-polar. Hydrocarbons are almost exclusively non-polar. (The molecules have no different charge at one end than the other.) Water is a polar molecule. (The hydrogen end is one polarity and the oxygen end is the other.) That is why they don't mix. Ethanol is almost non-polar, but it has an oxygen atom at one end and not at the other.

Modern materials can be made to resist one thing at a time and trying to resist attacks by two different things is like fighting a war on two fronts. It is really tough to do.

With the exception of a very few "Flex-Fuel" vehicles, all the American OEs will void the warranty if you fuel with E-15 and then the engine, fuel handling or emissions system requires repair.

Matt--there are now millions of flex fuel vehicles on the road and they can run fine on 0 to 85% alcohol. The only difference between similar non-flex fuel models is the calibration. The fuel related parts are now all the same. Now whether any of that makes sense for the customer is a differnt story.
