I have used a Hauppauge WinTV-HVR 950Q the same way. You connect a TV cable on one end and plug it into your USB port - works great but I don't use it - we don't watch TV in the GMC (no TiVo). I have two of them. I don't use one at all and the other is being used to get a picture from a VCR to a PC for recording. Want to buy one?

Hauppauge makes several types of TV to PC converters. Included software will perform TiVo type function. Less than $100. There are other brands available, but Hauppauge appears to make the better designs.

That is why I bought the Hauppauge devices but I am not into punishing myself that way. The device works great for watching TV, it comes with Win-TV for recording what is being watched but it is very primitive. I planned on using Ubuntu and MythTV but I could not get it to work and didn't feel like working that hard when I have functioning TiVo's.
This is a good way to watch TV on a PC in your GMC (content) but that is the limit for me.

Armand,
It sounds like you tried to install MythTV on top of Ubuntu.
If you ever feel like giving MythTV another try, the Mythbuntu distribution is a more direct route. I use it in my GMC (which makes this post on-topic) on a Dell dual-core laptop. My tuner is an HDHomerun from Silicon Dust.

Jerry,
Thanks for reading Rob's question and answering it. All the other
responses had nothing to do with your question, but you figured that out,
I'll bet. It often gets me how people chime in with a response without
understanding the question.
Jerry's answer, translated, is that the signals are different. Very much
like the difference between PAL and NTSC.
