Any one ever cut up an OEM oil cooler or know of a picture or drawing of the internal configuration?

Is it just a continuation of the ~7/16 tube that mounts to the fittings on the back of the radiator end tank? Is it a single pass or double pass cooler? Does it have mild S curves entry to exit with no sharp bends to trap debris?

Can it be cleaned internally?

Is there a flush kit or tool (like a flexible rifle bore brush/patch that can be used to make sure that it is clean and reusable after an engine failure?

Id go aftermarket and get one to replace it. Id imagine you could clean it
in a solvent tank by running the filler hose to it and letting the washer
pump solvent through it. Its not to much psi so no worry about blowing it
up.

But id still replace it with an aftermarket one.

Gene,

Rather than try to summarize I am adding a link to a discussion on the oil cooler and what to do after an engine failure.

http://gmc.mybirdfeeder.net/GMCforum/index.php?t=msg&goto=223282&rid=904&srch=oil+cooler+radiator#msg_223282

This may stimulate another question or two.

Hope it helps.
Dennis

Gene:

This is what my cooler looked like in my 74 260. The Radiator was new a few years ago. (By the PO in Iowa) SO: I'm not really sure this is what the stock cooler would be. However: here is what I know.

I decided to put in an aftermarket oil cooler because I could not be assured the oil cooler was clean enough after an engine failure. Here is the completed installation.
