Has anyone installed any solar panels on their units? I'm looking for enough juice the power the house batteries system, run a swamp cooler and misc lights during the day, exhaust vent fans The swamp draws 120v 60 watt. One of the biggest problems I'm having with renters is they leave the bath lights and and running down the battery. I would like to completely eliminate the onan except for running the a/c. The more passive the better. Any ideas?

I think if you replace the bathroom lights with led lights you would solve the problem with the batteries going down. My led lights do little to battery when left on for long periods. I leave my floor lights on over night all the time, without it really dropping down the batteries.

Lots of ways to do things. There are a few out there being successful with out solar.

The beauty about solar is a majority of the attendees buy into the sustainable/green movement and by having the panels adds to the novelty. Also if I can set up a reliable passive system I can keep the batteries conditioned the other 51wks a year. Every year I'm swapping out batteries and as the number of coaches rise it's becoming a larger line item every year. I do agree tho that I've got to covert all the lighting to led.

George. Is that still for sale? I remember looking at that over a year ago. Actually we kicked around the idea of picking it up for a parts rig but it just wasn't in the budget

I'd think there is something to be said for straight 12v for everything, no
reason the swamp cooler needs 110v, then again, your machines get used for
a week a year, which is an unusual usage pattern!

Certainly you can do solar, but what is cost effective? On the one hand,
tilting the panels could be a win, but then you need to get people to park
in the right orientation (but that would make sense, probably want the door
on the north (shadier) side of the coach).

I don't know what can be done about abuse of the batteries DURING Burning Man, but using a "Batter Minder" (the real McCoy) while the coaches are in your "stable" will go a long way to get multi-year service from your batteries.

David,

Here's what I did:

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/g6227-solar-battery-charging.html

The system may be a little small to be foolproof for the casual user. We are pretty careful with power consumption during the evening hours, but it keeps our house batteries charged, no problem. The system is expandable.

My mentor on this was Dan Gregg. I also did a small presentation at Western States last year:
