That's really nostalgic for me! Never drove on any roads quite as bad as
those, nor the off-road routes, but when a teenager, I was on many dirt/mud
& logging roads almost as bad in SE Alabama. Heard many tales from my Dad,
who in the 30's was a delivery driver for oil pipeline construction.
Including, from his youth, tales of T-model rollovers similar to shown.
I particularly remember a fishing trip, right after heavy rains, into the
White Water Creek swamp. The logging road had saw slabs (those cut off,
with bark, to convert round trees into square billets) laid parallel to the
route in especially deep mud holes. We hit one of those holes fast enough
to carry us through it -- except that one of the slabs became lodged in one
of the holes in a frame cross member of the '37 Ford 5-window coupe. We
came to an abrupt stop before spending most of the day wallowing in the mud
trying to extricate the log.
I've got lots of "muddy road" tales -- the '99 CRV is my only AWD vehicle
ever. Ahhh...the "good old days" before the luxury of GMC's. :-)

My town is one of those that shuts down if we get a half-inch of snow. When my kids were of driving age (and thinking they were expert drivers), I'd take them to the big, empty Kmart parking lot when it snowed and put them behind the wheel. After they'd get up to 15-20 mph, I'd have them try to make a hard turn. Heh! I loved watching their eyes bug out when they went into a spin. A couple of them tell me that was the best driving lesson they ever had.

My dad took out onto the lake, pure ice with some snow on top, and taught us to handle a skid.
I took both my kids out to the parking lot, it definitly helps

My guess would be you folks were using a rear wheel drive car.
How did people get sold that FWD was superior to RWD when the only benefit
was to the manufacturer who was saving money??

Yeah, that would have been the case back then, though I did have a K car or two in the family fleet back then.

4WD: A couple of years ago, I was reading an article which interviewed a NH highway patrolman on hazardous winter driving. He said that the average 4WD SUV driver thought he would have plenty of traction on icy interstates and that overconfidence was the biggest problem.

Mike, most agencies are hanging on to their Crown Vic's as long as they can! The California Highway Patrol USED to replace vehicles at 85-90,000 miles. There are MANY CHP Crown Vics still on the road with WELL over 100-150K miles on them, the officers still prefer them.

They are getting the Police Special Explorers, not sure what engine. I
have seen a few of them around.

The local (Hall CountyGa) sheriff had an outfit remanufacture about a half dozen crown vics. This place puts a new crate engine and trans, with accessories, new brakes, wheels, diff, suspension bushings and components and radiators. About half the price of a new crown vic when they were built.
